Independent designer, 2011 to present
Designer for books, logos, covers, magazine pages, web sites, fliers. Using Adobe’s Creative Suite, I am able to design most any product you need. I typically work from home but am available for on-site assignments as well. See my portfolio here: jamiebaylisdesigns.com/portfolio.


CQ Roll Call

Director of Art and Graphics, 2005-2011
Led a 10-member team that produced print, online, photo and video products for CQ Roll Call. Oversaw all design work for CQ Weekly, a glossy magazine covering Congress, and CQ Today, a letter-size print daily; created graphics, page layouts and covers. Oversaw a multimedia team that created ambitious interactive pieces, including a poll tracker for congressional races and a tracker of economic indicators.


The Chronicle of Higher Education

Assistant Managing Editor for Art, 2002-2004
Led a team that produced the layout, graphics and photographs for The Chronicle of Higher Education (print), a weekly publication. Redesigned many of The Chronicle’s regular features and graphics. Oversaw the design of The Chronicle when it was nominated for a National Magazine Award for general excellence in 2003 and again in 2004.


Chamberbiz

Senior Content Manager, 2000
Managed the content and presentation of articles for this site for small-business owners, including writing and editing articles and designing the feature page. Assigned and edited stories, including a daily feature, consumer guides and Q&A columns from tax, legal and regulatory experts. Wrote articles. Designed the feature page layout and created charts and original graphic illustrations. Coded stories, using HTML.


The Washington Post

Graphics Editor, business desk, 1997-2000
Created most of the graphics for daily and Sunday business sections: generated ideas, researched data, wrote text and designed the display. Managed a graphics assistant. Wrote occasional stories for the business section, including a Sunday business cover on the Pokemon craze in August 1999.

Layout and copy editor, features and national desks,
May 1989 – October 1994
Laid out pages, copy-edited articles, wrote headlines. Selected and edited wire articles for the religion and ethics section; filled in as editor of the Sunday opinionsection and the science and medicine section. Reporter, Alameda County Bureau, January 1993 – February 1993: covered cops, courts and wrote local features. Member of the San Jose Mercury News team awarded the 1989 Pulitzer Prize for general news reporting following the Loma Prieta earthquake.
